It’s Over! What Is Digitalis and How Did It Kɪʟʟ Sam on General Hospital?

Everyone was stunned when Sam died following the transplant surgery on General Hospital and now that her autopsy results have come back there are even more questions because they show that Sam died as a result of an overdose of digitalis. Which naturally led many viewers to wonder exactly what is digitalis?

Digitalis is a medicine used to treat heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure. It is also sometimes administered before surgery to prevent heart failure.

However, due to the medicine’s extreme toxicity, levels have to be very carefully measured to prevent overdose. Because at higher levels, digitalis can cause heart failure.

Other symptoms include confusion, elevated heart rate, difficulty breathing, and decreased consciousness.

When Portia revealed that Sam’s toxicology report showed she died of a digitalis overdose, Liz was stunned because digitalis wasn’t even prescribed for the transplant procedure.

As head nurse, she supervised all medications that Sam was given as she underwent surgery to donate a portion of her liver to save Lulu’s life. So how was the digitalis administered?

While Liz now fears she could be blamed for Sam’s death, she’s convinced that no one on staff administered digitalis during the transplant procedure and that a review of everyone’s actions during the op will prove that.

Immediately following the surgery, Sam awoke in recovery and appeared perfectly fine. She accepted Dante’s proposal and happily showed off her engagement ring to Alexis. Everything appeared normal… until it wasn’t.

Could someone have injected Sam with digitalis following the surgery? If so, who? Some fans are convinced that Cyrus had something to do with it, perhaps to ensure that Dante would be free to reunite with Lulu when she awakens from her coma.

But he’d have no way of knowing Lulu was going to wake up anytime soon, so was he simply planning really far ahead just in case? Or could someone else be behind Sam’s overdose and the unexpected shutdown of Lulu’s ventilator beforehand?
