The future of “Blue Bloods” doesn’t look as blue.
During a presentation at Paramount’s annual stockholders meeting Tuesday, Paramount Global co-CEO Brian Robbins hinted that a new “Blue Bloods” series is in the works.
“In TV, new franchise extensions are coming for ‘Dexter,’ ‘Billions,’ and ‘Blue Bloods,’ ” Robbins said.
Spinoffs have already been announced for “Billions” (“Millions”) and “Dexter,” (“Dexter: Origins”) but an official “Blue Bloods” spinoff has not been announced.
The show is set to end in the fall with Season 14. It premiered in 2010, and starred Selleck, 79, as New York City Police Commissioner and family patriarch Frank Reagan.
Selleck has been vocal about his desire for the show to continue.
He told TV Insider, “CBS will find an awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye to it. The show’s more popular than ever, and I think [numbers] will increase with the interest this year,” he added. “We’re certainly not out of ideas. I’m not counting the days so I can do something else.”
Fans of the long-running series were dealt a blow with the news that the show is set to end.
Without his paycheck from the show, Selleck also fears that he may be forced to hand over his Ventura County, California, ranch, he said.
Speaking on “CBS Sunday Morning” in May, the Emmy-winning actor said, “You know, hopefully I keep working enough to hold onto the place.”
“Seriously, that’s an issue? If you stopped working?” host Tracy Smith asked.
“That’s always an issue,” Selleck said. “If I stopped working, yeah. Am I set for life? Yeah, but maybe not on a 63-acre ranch!”
The “Friends” guest star added, “I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses,” regarding the network’s choice to pull the plug on the show.
“We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows, and still holding our place. So, I don’t know. You tell me!”
