Unfortunately, the Season 13 finale, “Forgive Us Our Trespasses,” saw Erin abandon her campaign. This felt out-of-character and counterintuitive for the show, especially as it nears its conclusion. There must be a stronger resolution for Erin before “Blue Bloods” ends with the second half of Season 14 later this fall.

When Erin announced her decision to run in Season 12, it seemed well-considered. Though not a natural politician, as the bureau chief of the Trial Bureau in the District Attorney’s Office, she understands legal bureaucracy.
Her father, New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck), also supported her decision in the Season 13 episode, “First Blush.”
Therefore, the build-up to the DA election, only for Erin to change her mind, felt like a bait-and-switch. Her reasoning that she could do more in her current role seems illogical and a safe choice to avoid altering the show’s status quo for the final season.
“Blue Bloods” has made significant changes in the past. Characters like Edit Janko, Joe Hill, and Danny Reagan’s late wife Linda have shifted the dynamics of the show.

Jamie Reagan’s promotion to sergeant and his role in the Field Intelligence Unit also marked significant changes. Comparatively, Erin seeking a higher legal office would be a natural progression for her character arc.
Erin Reagan has always appeared destined for a higher role, such as District Attorney. This position would seem like a stopgap to an even higher office, such as a Congressional representative or state senator.
Erin embodies the legal pragmatism desired in a District Attorney. She has a strong sense of justice and compassion for victims and less dangerous felons seeking a fresh start.
There is still time for the writers to resolve Erin’s situation. She could take the role of District Attorney through a time skip or a significant event.

Ending “Blue Bloods” without Erin’s ascension to a higher office would be a missed opportunity. Her advancement would bring her character arc full circle, mirroring an emotional ending for Frank Reagan, who might resign as Police Commissioner, handing over the role to a worthy successor.
“Blue Bloods” recently wrapped up the first half of its abbreviated fourteenth season with a midseason finale. The series will return with another half-season later this fall on CBS. Season 14.5 will consist of eight episodes, as confirmed by Tom Selleck.
Additionally, Paramount and CBS Entertainment plan to continue the franchise. This could mean a new season exclusive to Paramount+, a new series spin-off, or another event. Therefore, there is still time for the show’s creatives to craft a fitting and emotional resolution for Erin Reagan’s character arc.
