The Shady Side Of Tom Selleck Blue Bloods

The Shady Side of Tom Selleck

Tom Selleck became a major TV star in the ’80s with his iconic role in “Magnum P.I.” and his famous mustache.

After eight successful seasons, Selleck surprisingly took a break from his career to focus on his marriage to Jillie Mack, which paid off as they’re still together today.

Although he stepped back from the spotlight, Selleck continued acting, appearing in various projects throughout the ’90s, including “Friends.”

In the 2000s, he starred in a Hallmark TV movie franchise as police chief Jesse Stone, and since 2010, he’s been a lead on “Blue Bloods,” which is still going strong.

Despite his success, Selleck has stayed out of tabloids for much of his career, but some controversies have emerged:

The End of Tom Selleck’s First Marriage

Before marrying Jillie Mack in 1987, Selleck was wed to model Jacqueline Ray for a decade. The pair divorced in 1982, just as Selleck’s career was taking off.

Reports from Radar suggest that Selleck once got emotional during a screening of his Hallmark movie “Jesse Stone,” where his character reminisces about divorce, saying, ”

The bust-up was the worst thing that ever happened to me.” Rumors circulated that their marriage ended because Selleck “fell in love with the island and the island girls” while shooting “Magnum P.I.” in Hawaii, leading Ray to file for divorce.

Rumors Involving Sophia Loren

In the early ’80s, while filming “Lassiter” in London, Selleck met Jillie Mack and was immediately smitten, visiting her performance in “Cats” multiple times before asking her out.

They married in 1987, and Selleck quit “Magnum P.I.” the following year to focus on family life. However, tabloids speculated about an affair with his neighbor, Sophia Loren.

Selleck humorously set the record straight, joking that he had permission to be unfaithful only if Loren invited him for cappuccino in a specific manner, which never happened.

Life on the Ranch

Selleck and Mack bought a 65-acre ranch in Ventura County, California, in 1988. Selleck has often expressed how much he loves ranch life, describing it as a “real blessing” and a retreat from Hollywood.

He enjoys the physical work and watching things grow on his avocado farm, despite disliking the fruit itself, saying it makes him “gag.”

Water Lawsuit

In 2015, Selleck and Mack were sued by Calleguas Municipal Water District for allegedly stealing water from a public hydrant for their avocado farm during California’s severe droughts.

The district claimed a truck was seen filling up water at least 12 times and requested a court order to stop Selleck from using their water.

They also demanded compensation for the investigation costs. Eventually, Selleck settled the lawsuit, paying the P.I.’s bill and agreeing not to take water from the district again.

Reverse Mortgage Controversy

In 2016, Selleck became a national spokesman for American Advisors Group (AAG), promoting reverse mortgages as a way for older adults to enhance their retirement. In 2021, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau accused AAG of false advertising, alleging the company made deceptive claims.

AAG was ordered to pay $173,400 in consumer redress and a $1.1 million civil penalty. Retirement blogs have debated the truthfulness of Selleck’s ads, with some concluding that while slightly misleading, they are “pretty truthful” overall.

Despite these controversies, Tom Selleck remains a beloved figure in entertainment, known for his enduring career and commitment to family.
