John Black’s Exit Story Was Written When Drake Hogestyn Was Alive, And He Approved It
It’s important to note that when John’s exit storyline from DOOL was crafted and filmed, Drake Hogestyn was still alive. Despite his serious illness and challenging prognosis, the team at the show remained hopeful for his return.
Deidre Hall, who plays Marlena Evans, shared her thoughts in a March interview, stating, ‘I know that Ken [Corday, the executive producer] had spoken with Drake and assured him that the door was always open.
Ken said, ‘As soon as you’re ready to come back, you’re back;’ we all who cared for him were prepared for any outcome.’ Essentially, there was a shared understanding that while John was set for a tragic exit, Hogestyn could have made a comeback if he experienced a miraculous recovery.
Drake Passed Away So The Just-In-Case Exit Storyline Had To Be Used
Unfortunately, that didn’t come to pass as Hogestyn passed away in September 2024 after his battle with pancreatic cancer. However, the possibility of his return being left open suggests that at that the time the show may have steered clear of an organ donation plotline originally.
This could have complicated matters if they had managed to bring John back, but he did approve his exit storyline and helped craft it. It seems more likely that John will be given a presumed death in light of the situation; nevertheless, Days has shown a knack for reversing any fatality if they choose to.
They might have intended to make it work regardless and concoct some outrageous explanation had Hogestyn returned, but perhaps there was a “just in case” alternate storyline.
Drake Could Have Approved This Just-In-Case Storyline-Even If Not, They Wanted To Keep John A Hero
In that scenario, there remains a possibility that John could play a pivotal role in Bo’s comeback storyline; this sepsis medication is still in its infancy, with no guarantees it will work.
Even if Shawn Brady (Brandon Beemer) and Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols) succeed in acquiring it, Bo might be too far gone for it to be effective as his organs begin to fail.
There’s a chance that John could face serious injuries during his exit storyline, potentially sacrificing himself to donate an organ and save Bo.
