DOOL Spoilers: VERY SAD! Sarah takes Victoria away from Salem, running away from Xander

It’s tough to imagine a way out of this for Xander or Sarah after Wednesday’s Days of Our Lives. What Xander did to Philip was brutality on a stomach-turning scale. And his confrontation with Sarah had even us scared. Thanks to Victoria, Sarah and Xander will always be tied together, but she made it pretty clear when she threw him out of the house that they were done. Maybe for good, this time.

This isn’t the first time she’s turned her back on Xander because she was upset with his actions. But this isn’t Xander kidnapping for money. It’s not lying to Sarah about something underhanded he did. (In fact, that was Sarah’s schtick this time around.) It’s not shady business dealings or threats to people.

It was beating his brother in a cold-blooded rage, and Sarah, being the doctor who treated Philip, knowing exactly how much damage Xander did.

We knew Xander would be furious and hurt by Sarah keeping Philip’s secret. We knew there’d probably be a fight and he’d have a tough time moving forward. But the Xander we saw on Wednesday?

Don’t get us wrong. The performances that both Paul Telfer and Linsey Godfrey delivered were incredible. We were actually a bit scared for Sarah, and they both had valid reasons to be angry with each other. Even the staging, as Sarah stood her ground in the face of Xander’s fury and the man she still loved stood, seething before the portrait of his father was fantastic.

But the Xander we saw was the cold, remorseless mercenary of old. There were the sneers, the glares, the look of contempt even at Maggie as she walked by. There was the cold fury in Xander’s eyes and in everything he said and did.

The Xander that we grew to forgive and love over the years after his villainous start was gone. The one standing before us was, as Sarah said, “monstrous.”Whether or not the redeemed Xander can ever come back isn’t the only question we have, though. Because there’s also the question of whether the fans will buy it.

“I’m over the character,” Buterflis wrote on the Soaps.com message boards. “No redemption there for me after that. I guess they want to write him as ruthless like his father.”

“I hate that they made him a thug again,” lurker_girl wrote on the same thread. “Despicable. I had been enjoying his more mature, intelligent self up until now. Get him to anger-management therapy quick!”

Though a few folks weren’t upset at Philip getting his comeuppance, and a number also feel like Sarah was most definitely in the wrong, most are just horrified at what Xander’s become.

Maybe he can stay out of prison. He was careful to not (directly) admit he beat Philip even to Sarah. If Philip, for whatever reason, decides not to press charges — provided he survives — Xander will get away with it. But what is there left for him in Salem besides money and, if he wins whatever battle is coming with Sarah, Victoria? Even Maggie has to turn her back on him after this.

There’s a definite spark of humanity left in Xander, even now. But if he loses Victoria, too, that may be snuffed out. About the only rule in daytime is never say never. But right now, it’s tough to imagine Xander ever returning to the man he was before.
