In 1990, she was cast in the FOX network’s daily serial Tribes, which lasted for one season of 95 episodes. Afterward, Stafford appeared in two plays directed by Charles Durning.
In October 1994, Stafford signed to CBS’s The Young and the Restless, where she was to play the short-term role of villainess Phyllis Summers. When her work impressed head writer and executive producer William J. Bell, Stafford was placed on contract, and she remained with the soap for three years.
Subsequently, Michelle Stafford starred in the primetime series Pacific Palisades and guest-starred in programs such as Players, Two Guys and Girl, Diagnosis: Murder, JAG, and V.I.P., as well as the feature films Double Jeopardy (opposite Ashley Judd) and Attraction.
In July 2000, Stafford reprised the part of Phyllis on Y&R, and this time, she reigned as a front-burner player for 13 years. Between 2014 and 2019, Stafford starred on General Hospital as Nina Reeves — a role she eventually ceded to Cynthia Watros in order to return to The Young and the Restless.
