Harrison’s Heartache: The Innocent Caught in the Crossfire
Harrison sat on the living room floor, his toy cars scattered around him. But the usual joy he found in playing was gone. Instead, his little face was clouded with confusion and sadness.
The constant tension between Summer and Kyle had begun to weigh on him.
He didn’t fully understand why they couldn’t get along, but he hated seeing them argue.
“Why do Summer and Kyle fight so much?” Harrison asked one evening, looking up at Kyle with wide, tear-filled eyes. “Don’t they love you?”
Kyle’s heart broke at the question. How could he explain the complexities of adult relationships to his young son?
Harrison was too young to understand the history, betrayals, and tangled emotions that had led to this conflict. But one thing was clear: it was hurting Harrison.
And then there was the other question Harrison had started asking more frequently—one that Kyle struggled to answer.
“Dad,” Harrison said softly, “where’s Mommy? Why doesn’t she come to see me?”
The mention of Tara Locke made Kyle’s chest tighten. How could he explain to Harrison that his mother had caused so much destruction, that she was in prison for her crimes?
Kyle had tried to protect Harrison from the truth, but now he wondered if shielding him was doing more harm than good.
“I miss her,” Harrison added, his voice breaking. “I want to see her.”
Kyle knelt down and wrapped Harrison in a hug, his mind racing. He needed to fix things for Harrison’s sake. That meant ending the toxic rivalry between Summer and Kyle once and for all.
